The Depressing One I Warned You About

Good morning! No coffee yet, but I did accidently grab a dirty glass my boyfriend had been drinking beer out of last night. Now I've got beer-flavored water to kick off the day - all I need is a doughnut and I'd be Homer Simpson.

Okay, we're off...  Please, please, please do not drink and drive! Not ever, not once, do not do it. Cabs are relatively inexpensive - and definitely cheaper than jail and the cost of someone's life. I'm sure you know what I'm currently referring to: Nick Adenhart, pitcher for the Anaheim Angels, and two other passengers were killed by a drunk driver yesterday. The fourth passenger, Jon Wilhite, is in serious condition at a local hospital. All victims were/are in their early twenties. The man allegedly responsible for this tragedy was driving on a suspended license due to previous drunk driving incidents. It's a very, very sad situation and my thoughts go out to the families of the victims.

Another topic of discussion: Seth Rogen date rapes Anna Faris in the "comedy" Observe & Report. I guess that was a "spoiler" - but fuck that. They kind of "spoiled" it for me and every other woman out there who had intentions of seeing the film. When does rape become an option in pushing the limits of comedy? (Click on that link to watch the trailer and read on excellent summary of this topic via Jezebel.) In the flick, Anna's character downs tequila and pops pills - the next time she comes to, Seth's character is "pumping up and down on her." It's clear that consent has not been offered - there's vomit nearby and she's initially passed out at the beginning of the sex act. She briefly, barely, regains consciousness long enough to mutter the following: "Why are you stopping, motherfucker?" Then she passes out again. Funny. I'm not for censorship and I'm certainly not a prude - but doesn't this send a dangerous message? Especially to teens who already believe Rihanna "deserved" the beating she received. Why clear the path for sexual assault as well?

And finally, would you run a family out of town because an eighteen year old expressed a distaste for her birthplace on Myspace? That's what happened in Coalinga, California. Cynthia Monroe expressed her dislike for Coalinga and shared it with her friends via the Internet. Her former principal ran across her opinion, forwarded it to the local paper, where it landed in print as a "Letter To The Editor" with her name attached! Sound like a gross invasion of privacy? Not according to the court! Read all about it here. What does it say about the people of Coalinga, who chose to take such violent actions based on one teens thoughts? The extreme reaction seems to border on a weird, self-imposed, McCarthism style of censorship. Scary stuff.
